I-20 connects with I-285 on Atlanta's west side at the interchange described in GDOT's January 2026 reconstruction fact sheet. The agency identifies the west-interchange project as work in Fulton and Cobb counties. Its scope includes the interstate ramps as well as lanes and bridges beyond the central interchange. A reference to I-20 alone does not identify which part of that work area a crash concerns.[1]

West-side project limits

The fact sheet describes additional I-20 lanes from Factory Shoals Road east to Hamilton E. Holmes Drive. The I-285 work runs from Martin Luther King Jr. Drive north to Donald Lee Hollowell Parkway. A westbound collector-distributor system would connect the interchange area toward Fulton Industrial Boulevard. GDOT also describes removal of left-hand ramp entrances and exits and construction of two-lane ramps.[1]

Beyond one interchange

ARC's freight planning also considers the eastern I-20 corridor. Its May 2023 presentation identifies the Conyers/Covington area as a freight-heavy corridor along I-20 east. That regional freight description is distinct from the west-interchange construction limits. It should not be read as a collision count or an assessment of one site's safety.[2]

For the west project, GDOT's January 2026 publication gives a July 2025 construction start and anticipated substantial completion in 2030. These dated milestones provide context; they do not establish temporary traffic control at a specific time.[1]
