I-85 is a major northeastern gateway to metro Atlanta, with separate express-lane segments described by Peach Pass. The first runs from Chamblee Tucker Road, just south of I-285, to Old Peachtree Road in Gwinnett County. The extension continues from Old Peachtree Road to Hamilton Mill Road. Those named endpoints help distinguish two facilities on the same interstate.[1]

Vehicle restrictions in the express lanes

Peach Pass states that vehicles with more than two axles or six wheels cannot use the I-85 express lanes, with an exception for over-the-road buses. Vehicles with trailers and tractor-trailer trucks are also prohibited. These are express-lane restrictions; they should not be restated as a prohibition on all commercial traffic along the I-85 corridor.[1]

The inside-I-285 route rule is separate. Georgia Code section 40-6-51 applies to specified vehicles on the portion of I-85 within the Perimeter and includes trip-purpose exceptions. An inquiry about a truck's route needs the actual segment and the applicable rule, rather than an assumption that all I-85 lanes have the same restrictions.[2]

Freight along the northeast corridor

ARC's February 2025 freight-plan presentation identifies Norcross, North Gwinnett and Tucker among its freight clusters. These planning areas give regional context to distribution activity. They are not a finding that a particular carrier used an express lane or that congestion caused a particular collision.[3]
